Using cannabis to curb certain disorders such as social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and depression is not a novelty.

With the increasing impact of anxiety disorders on family life and the economy, the number of those turning to cannabis as a solution is on the rise. (Benzinga)

How the pandemic became a bonanza for Florida’s medical marijuana industry

Rising anxiety and worsening chronic health conditions led to a surge in demand for cannabis that businesses have capitalized on. But thanks to state law, the industry is dominated by just 22 companies.

The pandemic has triggered a medical marijuana boon in Florida.

Over the past two years, the number of people with medical marijuana cards has more than doubled, hundreds more doctors have become licensed to qualify patients, new dispensaries have opened almost weekly and a wide variety of new products have become available.

With anxiety levels rising and chronic health conditions deepening during the numerous COVID-19 waves, more Floridians are seeking cannabis as a medical treatment and the industry has found a way to get it to them.

Medical marijuana industry booming in Florida in last two years

As in other states that have legalized medical marijuana, Florida has seen a huge increase in doctors, users and dispensary businesses in the last few years, thanks in part to the COVID-10 pandemic.

“Cannabis is one of the few industries in the world that grew during the pandemic,” Javier Hasse, of Benzinga, which tracks business trends, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel last week.

“Home deliveries and the fact that it was declared essential in the U.S. really helped, but deep down people were looking for something to deal with stress,” he said.

Mike Tyson was headed for expensive weed conference before airplane attack

Al Pacino’s Scarface sagely advised drug dealers never to get high on their own supply. But we wonder if Mike Tyson would actually be in less trouble if he’s toked a little of his own weed line before boarding his flight.

The heavyweight legend reportedly lost his temper with an overexcited (and possibly overserved) fan before takeoff on his flight from San Francisco to Miami on Thursday — and seemingly punched the guy several times, leaving the his head bloodied.

But The Post hears that news of the incident harshed the collective mellow at the Benzinga Cannabis Conference, because “Iron Mike” was supposed to be the main speaker at a $3000-a-ticket reception on Thursday night.

Local cannabis, hemp testing lab expanding near Tampa

A Tampa-based, third-party testing lab for cannabis and hemp is expanding with the addition of a new Brandon facility.

Method Testing Labs, founded in 2019 by cannabis industry veterans Keith Browning and Rob Radke, plan to open a 7,200-square-foot facility at 2720 Broadway Center Blvd. by July 1.

“We love the Tampa area. We did not want to move outside of the I-4/I-75 [corridor],” says Browning, explaining the area offers easy transporting.

Plans call for the addition of another 10 to 15 employees in Brandon, including analytical chemistry, microbiology, lab technician, transport, customer service and quality assurance staff.

Focus on eyes: Marijuana can help with glaucoma but it's still not a recommended remedy

woman's eyes

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.

The visual loss in glaucoma is the result of damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain so we can see light, colors and objects.

Untreated glaucoma with uncontrolled eye pressure can cause the death of cells in the optic nerve, diminished peripheral vision and eventually blindness.

As of February 2022, a total of 37 states, the District of Columba, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands have legalized marijuana for medical uses, including treatment of glaucoma.

There is a lot of information regarding the health benefits of marijuana online and in the social media.

It is difficulty to sort out the truth from fiction.

Here is why Florida should legalize marijuana

Florida beach

Local and national support for legal cannabis shows us that the best course of action is to work toward decriminalization and, eventually, full legalization.

The freedom to make one’s own choices is central to our nation’s values and the great state of Florida. With cannabis legalization growing in popularity across the country, it’s now time to legalize adult-use cannabis in Florida and give back a choice that has been denied us for almost a century.

Floridians overwhelmingly support cannabis legalization. The latest polling data shows that 70 percent of us believe cannabis should be legal. However, our lawmakers have been slow to respond to the will of the people.
