$1.9M in cannabis intercepted after UPS staff smell something skunky

Man faces multiple charges after being mailed seven separate boxes containing weed

A 31-year-old man has been charged with trafficking marijuana after his alleged bid to receive about 86 kilograms of weed through the mail earlier this year was returned to sender.

The Panama City Police Department (PCPD) this week offered a loud and thankful shout-out to a UPS store in the Florida community after employees there noticed three large boxes that smelled like weed and called the cops in late January.

Officers responded, bringing along a trusty K-9 officer to give the boxes a sniff. The dog alerted to the presence of cannabis, notes the PCPD statement.

Seniors are using cannabis more than ever before

TAMPA, Fla., Marvin Yeoman, 74, had tried cannabis as a young adult, but for his wife it was new.

“I never, never, ever even thought about marijuana when I was growing up — never in college, as a young adult or as a middle-aged adult,” said Rene Yeoman, 71. “It was just not even something that was on my radar.”

The Land O’ Lakes residents had both undergone recent major surgeries, so they gave in to their daughter’s suggestion to use the drug to treat chronic pain.

Rene Yeoman discovered she liked how edibles helped her sleep through the night and avoid the use of other medications.

And as seniors the couple is in good company.

The Florida cannabis industry is growing. Here's why Palm Beachers may want in.

The first Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce breakfast event of the year focused on a taboo subject that is said to have numerous business opportunities.

At the Jan. 4 breakfast at The Breakers, nearly 400 residents and business owners gathered to learn about Florida's cannabis industry.

Laurel Baker, the chamber's chief executive officer, said she thought the presentation would provoke an important discussion not commonly heard.

"One of the directions that I have in finding programs is to bring to light topics that you normally wouldn't think to go to a chamber breakfast to hear," she said.

Baker said the idea of a cannabis business goes beyond the walls of a dispensary.

Ron DeSantis hints at decriminalizing marijuana in Florida but opposes its recreational use due to its 'putrid' stench

Despite suggesting he is in favor of its decriminalization, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis cited the "putrid" scent of cannabis as a reason he may remain opposed to fully legalizing its use in the state, Politico reported. "I think a lot of those other areas that have done it you know have ended up regretting it," DeSantis said Wednesday during a press conference in Tallahassee, according to Politico. "I could not believe the pungent odor that you would see in some of these places and I don't want to see that here. I want people to be able to breathe freely."

Florida’s roadmap to cannabis legalization

The wait for legal cannabis in Florida may continue longer than proponents planned, but if everything goes accordingly from a planning and preparation standpoint, the wait may be worthwhile for consumers.

Ever since Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize recreational cannabis use about a decade ago, dozens of other states have followed in their footsteps. In fact, nearly half of the states in the country have recreational cannabis laws on the books now, which makes one curious as to where Florida is on cannabis legalization.

Florida's 2022 legislative session kicks off on Tuesday and this year lawmakers are working to pass a bipartisan medical marijuana bill.

Florida doesn’t have recreational marijuana and for its medical marijuana program, people have to have a valid medical reason and need to be able to get the marijuana prescribed.
