What’s in Your Cannabis? Creating a Safety Seal of Approval

cannabis in medical containers

When California first passed Proposition 64 legalizing recreational cannabis, voters waited in eager anticipation for natural, quality products to purchase.

What they found instead was 84.3% of sampled cannabis tested positive for pesticide residue.

The research, conducted by Steep Hill Labs, Inc., further concluded that 65% of cannabis samples submitted to their lab contained Myclobutanil, a pesticide that when smoked or vaporized is converted to Hydrogen Cyanide.

As the name suggests, the chemical is extremely toxic for humans to ingest.

Discoveries like these underscore the importance of lab testing requirements for cannabis operators.

Miami rejects medical cannabis dispensaries. A lawsuit could bring matter to a head

Two companies fighting to open medical marijuana dispensaries downtown have sued the city of Miami, challenging the city’s stance that federal law trumps the Florida Constitution.

Miami’s city government has rejected cannabis dispensaries since Florida voters approved the creation of a full-fledged medical marijuana marketplace in a 2016 referendum that amended the state Constitution. Instead of creating zoning restrictions to regulate where dispensaries can open, or outright banning them, Miami has created no new laws and relied on an internal legal opinion that the change to the Florida Constitution was moot because federal law continues to categorize marijuana as an illegal substance with no medicinal value.

Florida will no longer test boxers, MMA fighters for marijuana

The Florida State Boxing Commission has made a major change to its policy regarding cannabis.

At a meeting Tuesday, the commission voted to essentially eliminate marijuana from its prohibited drug list, Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation spokesperson Patrick Fargason told ESPN on Tuesday. Previously in Florida, even trace amounts of cannabis found in a fighter's system would lead to a suspension, fine and a victory getting overturned.

"We're not testing for it," Fargason said. "We're not doing anything with it -- period."

Florida's Marijuana Market Is About to Explode

Florida's marijuana market consists of 22 Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs). Each center owns a vertically-integrated license that allows and requires them to grow, process, dispense, and deliver medical marijuana. Also, five laboratories are licensed to perform third-party testing of medical marijuana.

In Florida, the medical marijuana license allows the current MMTCs to build out as big of a footprint as possible in preparation for adult use (recreational) legalization. This regulatory framework is unique from most other states, which provide specialized licenses and have a cap on the production of marijuana per license-holder.

A bill aimed at capping the amount of THC in medical marijuana cleared its first committee stop in the Florida House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The Professions & Public Health Subcommittee passed the bill, HB 1455, allowing it to move forward in the Florida House.

The bill states that qualified physicians may not prescribe medical marijuana containing more than 10 percent THC to patients. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the high sensation.

The bill would also limit patients to 15,000 milligrams of THC every 35 days.

Should Florida legalize marijuana for adult use?

hand holding out cannabis

With the State in a budget crisis on the heels of the pandemic, some lawmakers are getting creative looking for revenue.

The CBS 12 News I Team is exploring one potentially profitable proposal: legalizing and taxing marijuana.

Politicians for it and pot professionals say the stigma is gone and they point out the potential for fast-cash is enormous.

For opponents, the bottom line is the doorway to addiction and sending the wrong message to kids.

Right now Florida medical marijuana patients pick up their pot at dispensaries like this Rise on Clematis Street.

Soon, they could be joined by recreational users, though the marijuana industry doesn’t like the term "recreational." They prefer “adult use” marijuana.
