Maine children getting sick from accidentally eating Marijuana edibles
Maine Sees Rise in Child Accidental Ingestions of Marijuana.
State data shows more than 50 children in Maine have accidentally ingested substances so far this year, a large percentage of those being marijuana.
The data comes from the Office of Child and Family Services. The Health and Human Services committee held a hearing Wednesday on the issue.
Several people testified about recent changes to Maine’s cannabis law, including removing the universal symbol from gummies, claiming it has affected accidental consumption.
"Unfortunately, that bill ultimately became law, which I believe, and I warned the committee would likely result in an increase in accidental ingestions. One of the critiques or the counters to that is that to a two-year-old, a universal symbol doesn't mean anything. That's 100% correct. But the universal does mean something to an adult, or a caretaker who particularly is unfamiliar with the problem,” said Jeff Hudak, the director of the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy.
The committee chair, Senator Joe Baldacci suggested working with DHHS and the governor’s office to draft a governor’s bill to address the issues.
