California Man Sentenced to Probation After Trafficking 360 Pounds of Marijuana in Oklahoma.

A 56-year-old man from Stockton, Cal. — arrested following a traffic stop on Highway 51 by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Long for trafficking 360.8 pounds of marijuana in Stillwater — has been placed on seven years’ probation as part of a plea agreement with the prosecution approved in court on July 2 by Payne County Associate District Judge Michael Kulling.

Xin Sun, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking through an interpreter in court on July 2, was ordered to have a substance abuse evaluation, take any recommended treatment, undergo random drug tests, maintain full-time employment, perform 100 hours of community service, and pay various assessments including a $2,000 fine, court records show.

Sun, who was freed on $100,000 bail five days after his arrest, had been stopped for exceeding the speed limit in rural Stillwater at 12:05 pm on Aug. 7, 2022, while driving a U Haul truck, according to the trooper’s affidavit.

The trooper, who is a nationally certified drug recognition expert, could smell the odor of marijuana as he got near the rear cargo area of the truck, according to his affidavit.

When the trooper asked Sun what was in the back of the U Haul, “Sun stated that it was furniture,” an affidavit alleged.

After the trooper asked Sun to open the cargo area of the U Haul, he “immediately smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the cargo area and observed many large brown moving types of boxes,” his affidavit alleged.

The trooper “opened one of the boxes and observed several individually packaged vacuum sealed plastic bags, each containing a green leafy substance with the odor of marijuana,” the affidavit alleged.

Using a translator app, the trooper advised Sun of his Miranda rights, which Sun said he understood, the affidavit alleged.

“Sun stated that he was being paid to transport this large amount of marijuana from Stillwater to Oklahoma City, but that he did not know that address. Sun stated that his boss was supposed to give him the address once he got to Oklahoma City.

“Sun could not give Long his boss’s name nor tell Long where he worked,” the affidavit alleged.

After Sun was arrested at 12:30 pm and taken to the Payne County Jail, the trooper “transported the 14 boxes of marijuana to a secure storage facility at the OHP Training Center in Oklahoma City. A total of 14 boxes housing 295 individual bundles with a combined weight of approximately 360.8 lbs. was recorded,” the affidavit alleged.

According to court records, that amount was almost 15 times more than the 25-pound requirement for a marijuana trafficking charge.
