Cannabis exports soar in Portugal

The medical cannabis business in Portugal continues to grow with around 10 tonnes being sold abroad last year, according to Jornal de Notícias.

According to the daily newspaper, which cites data from the National Health Service (SNS), last year there was a 63 percent increase in the volume of exports. This year, in the first half alone, more than five tonnes have already been sold, which is expected to break export records by the end of 2023.

The biggest buyers are Germany, Poland and Australia, after Israel, was the biggest buyer of this commodity in 2020. Last year, Spain imported almost 2,900 tonnes of medicinal cannabis from Portugal.

According to data from Infarmed, by the end of the first half of the year, 76 final authorisations had been issued for four types of cannabis business (cultivation, import - export, manufacturing and wholesale distribution).
