The city Planning Board will consider a proposal to open a retail cannabis dispensary in a former church on West Front Street.

SRV Front Street LLC is scheduled to appear before the Planning Board on Aug. 15 for a public hearing on its proposal to open the dispensary in a building that was the home of Kingdom Praise Ministries at the southwest corner of West Main Street and Clinton Avenue.

The property was also formerly occupied by a bank with a drive-thru. The location is across West Front Street from Dunkin' Donuts.

SRV Front Street of Roselle Park purchased the .46-acre property on Oct. 31, 2023 for $1.175 million, records show.

The use of the property as a retail cannabis dispensary is permitted and SRV Front Street has a redevelopment agreement with the city.

According to the application before the Planning Board, all cannabis products at the dispensary will be in pre-packaged containers and open products will not be packed on the site.

A variance is required for the front yard setback from West Front Street. While the zoning ordinance calls for a 10-foot setback, the plans propose a 9.41-foot setback.

Plainfield's cannabis ordinance calls for a maximum of five retail dispensaries in the city.

The latest dispensary, Island Vibez, opened on Roosevelt Avenue at the end of July. Two other dispensaries, Queen City and Royal M, have also opened in Plainfield.

The public hearing on the proposal is set for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15 in the City Hall Library, 515 Watchung Ave.
