Exploiting the 'high': American caught for selling 'cannabis tours' in Colombia

American Man Arrested for Orchestrating "Cannabis Tours" in Colombia.

You've heard of the "high road," but what about "high tourism"? In Colombia, an American man nicknamed "cannabis Jimmy" has been arrested for orchestrating "cannabis tours" where people could get high on free samples as they learned everything about the narcotic.

Cannabis tours

The 73-year-old man, as per CBS News, used social media and even had a website on which he advertised the so-called "Cannabis Farm tours".

He charged $30 for the tours in which foreigners could visit his house in Sabaneta, a town south of the city of Medellín in the northwestern part of the country, said the Colombian national police in a statement.

The "Cannabis Farm Tours" came with free samples and were limited to 2–8 people each. Flyers distributed by the American man boasted of tours given by "Cannabis Jimmy." To be part of the cannabis tours, people were required to make reservations in advance.

During the 2–3 hours long tour, 'Cannabis Jimmy' taught his visitors "the process of planting, caring for, harvesting, and maintaining this plant (cannabis)," said the police. On top of that, the man offered his "tourists" marijuana for $20 a gram.

Who is Cannabis Jimmy?

The Colombian police did not identify the man but said he was an American citizen. As per the report, authorities confiscated around 1,380 grams of marijuana during a raid on his house, the man was arrested.

Colombia and Cannabis

In Colombia, only medical cannabis and industrial hemp are legal and the narcotic has been cultivated in the nation since the late colonial period. Colombian law allows people to grow up to 20 plants and carry up to 20 grams for personal use, as per Reuters, selling marijuana is illegal.

The South American nation of Colombia also happens to be the world's largest exporter of cocaine — accounting for almost 90 per cent of it sold in the United States each year.
