Individual stamping requirement for Cannabis edibles dropped from Maine bill
Bill to Change Labeling of Recreational Cannabis Gummies Advances After Initial Hurdle.
The way recreational cannabis gummies are labeled could soon change after a bill passed its first legislative hurdle on Wednesday.
The bill designed to challenge how marijuana is packaged and sold includes intentions such as removing cartoonish imagery on labels and having a universal cannabis symbol stamped on each gummy.
The bill was created after a spike in incidents of children confusing edibles for candy and accidentally consuming the drug.
But cannabis proponents argue that the required "stamp" would pose manufacturing challenges for small businesses.
"We're open to compromise and we understand that individually marking and having it be legible on gummies has been problematic for a number of manufacturers,” said Vern Malloch, the deputy director of operations for the Office of Cannabis Policy.
The committee ultimately decided to drop the individual labeling requirement for gummies, with support from the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy.
