Unrolling confusion: Ohio's new marijuana laws stir up questions and ambiguity

Two months after Ohioans voted to pass it, a lot of questions are being asked regarding the legalization of marijuana.

Mike Petrella, owner of Ohio Valley Natural Relief who advocated for Issue 2's passing, says it has come with a puff of confusion.

"We funnel a lot of phone calls, emails of just normal citizens, even people from out of state who are wanting to come to our dispensary because they are unsure about the law,” he said. “They thought it went into effect they could walk in, be 21, and be ready to purchase."

So, what has changed so far?

"The fact that you're allowed to grow at home and the fact that you're allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana on you at one time," Petrella said.

He explains you are supposed to be obtaining legal marijuana from a dispensary, but they are not allowed to sell to the public just yet. Same goes for the seeds.

Petrella says there is a lot that goes into this on the political end that will generate plenty of conversation in Columbus.

Ohio State Representative Don Jones can attest to that and says the confusion among the public is very much valid.

"There is some frustration from folks that we're not moving fast enough, but you know, I will say this, we're trying to make sure we cover all our bases in house," Jones said.

Jones says right now, they are working on passing House Bill 354, which will modify adult use cannabis law.

"The bill is still in committee, which means we're still working through and trying to find what is going to be the best scenario that we put forth," he said.

But Jones says it is a big undertaking, as it will determine who is allowed to grow, sell, and process marijuana commercially.

And it is going to be February before they have something they pass.

"We want to make sure we address as many needs and concerns and issues ahead of time, rather than getting in the middle of this just to say, 'oh we didn't think about that,' or, 'we never considered this or that,' " Jones said.
