The medical cannabis market in Latin America is expected to be worth $8.5bn in 2028. Health Europa explores the industry, highlighting the main drivers in the rising economy.

A detailed look at how Aurora Cannabis can produce 700,000 kilograms a year

The marijuana industry is growing like a weed. According to various Wall Street prognostications, the global cannabis industry could be generating upwards of $50 billion to $75 billion in annual sales roughly one decade from now. That's a boatload of cash, and all the more reason for pot growers to double down on capacity expansion.

Although there are 11 growers that are currently on pace for more than 100,000 kilograms in peak annual output, according to their respective management teams, none stands out more than Alberta-based Aurora Cannabis (NYSE:ACB).

PharmaCielo granted new cannabis licenses in Colombia as competition heats up in Latin America

PharmaCielo (TSXV:PCLO) (CVE:PCLO), a Canadian based medical cannabis investor with global operations in Colombia, announced last Wednesday that they had been granted a proprietary license for 10 unique CBD and THC strains under Colombia’s national cultivar registry. These licenses come as a part of a national shift for Colombia to regulate its illegal drug trade and bring global prominence to one of its major agricultural products.

The Latin American country decriminalized small amounts of marijuana in the 1990s. It was a blow to the United States whose never-ending war on drugs, particularly cocaine and marijuana from Colombia, had gone on for decades.

Young people in liberal states use more cannabis, but have lower rates of dependence

Young people living in liberal states consume more marijuana, but have lower rates of marijuana dependence, according to a new study from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Crucially, this finding is true regardless of whether the state legalized medical marijuana, suggesting that the broader political climate affects how people use the drug. It also serves as a reminder that the effects of legalization will look different in different states.
