Springfield Township Committee Approves License for Cannabis Delivery Service

Springfield Township Approves Cannabis Delivery Service License After Special Meeting.

At a special meeting on Thursday, Aug. 22, the Springfield Township Committee voted to approve the license for a cannabis delivery service.

The governing body expressed its preference that the applicant receive a license issued by the state of New Jersey to operate its delivery service in the township.

"The subcommittee met several weeks ago with this delivery service," Committeeman Alex Keiser said. "We heard them out. I think they are a fine establishment. They answered all our questions. Just so everybody is clear, it's not that there is going to be any cannabis on the site that they are proposing. It is just a headquarters for them and a dispatch unit because they are a delivery service. They have drivers that go to each dispensary and then drop it off with anyone who orders through their app.

"So, there might not be any cannabis in Springfield. It depends on where their clientele is and which dispensaries they hook up with in the area."

Committeeman Rich Huber said he is concerned about how easy it might be for clients who are minors to falsify their age. "When I was 16, I could show proof that I was 16."

Township attorney Kraig Dowd said, "They did explain during their presentation that they have a pretty technical and sophisticated process to confirm the identities and the ages of the people who place the order and to whom they actually hand over the product."

Huber is a member of the Springfield Planning Board who abstained from voting on the license at a Planning Board meeting earlier this summer, however he voted in favor of the license at Thursday's Township Committee. The vote was 4-0, with Committeeman Chris Capodice absent from the meeting.
