New Study Highlights Therapeutic Benefits of Medical Marijuana for Older Adults.

A new study on the effects of medical marijuana on older adults finds that cannabis-based products can offer various therapeutic benefits.

The authors also noted significant reductions in pain severity and interference among older patients with chronic pain as their primary condition.

“There were consistent improvements across measures of general health and well-being after 3 months of treatment.”, said researchers from the UK-based organization Drug Science and Imperial College London’s Centre for Neuropsychopharmacology.

The study indicated that "older aged individuals experience considerable improvement in health and well-being when prescribed cannabis-based medicinal products." Patient outcomes were assessed using self-reported measures of quality of life, general health, mood, and sleep.  Results showed consistent improvements across all four well-being measures from the start of treatment to the three-month follow-up.

The study found that the levels of improvement in general health, quality of life, and sleep were similar for both older and younger individuals.
