The Best Places for a Pot-Friendly Getaway.
The trend of U.S. states legalizing recreational marijuana use is lifting tourism to new heights in 2024 and travelers have never had more choices when it comes to picking the perfect place for a cannabis-centric vacation.
The team at Upgraded Points recently analyzed data from home-sharing platform Airbnb and weed-friendly lodging site Bud and Breakfast to determine which U.S. cities offer travelers the most marijuana-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents and at what rate based on the average nightly price.
Here are the 10 cities that separate themselves from the rest this spring.
Boulder, Colorado
With 104.3 weed-friendly vacation rentals per 100,000 residents, Boulder, Colorado is the number one destination for cannabis-seeking travelers right now. However, the average nightly price of a 420-friendly stay will set guests back about $242.72, according to Upgraded Points.
Burlington, Vermont
Another college town with a laidback approach to weed, Burlington, Vermont boasts an impressive 87.5 cannabis-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents and visitors to this charming waterfront New England city can stretch their budget further with an average nightly rate of just $180.
Las Vegas, Nevada
No surprises here. Sin City is an easy choice for marijuana aficionados with more than 57 pot-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents and a slew of dispensaries available just off The Strip. The aforementioned accommodations will set guests back an average of $265.43 per night, however.
Scottsdale, Arizona
Elsewhere in the Southwest, Scottsdale, Arizona is home to 46.5 weed-friendly vacation rentals per 100,000 residents. Unfortunately, Scottsdale ranks second for most expensive weed-friendly stays, with an average nightly rate of $308.99. Only San Diego is more expensive at $360.
Portland, Maine
Maine was early in adopting legalized weed in 2016 and its most populous city of Portland hasn't looked back, boasting 43.84 cannabis-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents. The city is more expensive than its New England neighbor Burlington though, with an average nightly price of $253.29.
Denver, Colorado
Colorado was one of the first states to legalize recreational weed use in 2014 so it should come as little shock that Denver ranks among the 10 best cities for marijuana tourism in 2024. The Mile High City is home to 43.7 420-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents with a respectable average nightly rate of $212.
Colorado Springs, Colorado
South of both Boulder and Denver, Colorado Springs offers travelers a cheaper option when it comes to a getaway geared toward cannabis. The Rocky Mountain city features 32.9 weed-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents and an average nightly price of just $170.67.
Detroit, Michigan
Michigan was one of the earlier states to embrace legalized marijuana and since it became fully legal six years ago, Detroit has seen an emergence of weed-friendly rentals, 30.63 per 100,000 residents to be exact.
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Just west of Detroit, Ann Arbor offers slightly fewer pot-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents at 26.7. Additionally, a stay will set travelers back a bit more as the college city has an average nightly price of $248.50, up from $211.11 in Detroit.
Eugene, Oregon
Oregon has embraced the legalized marijuana movement for nearly a decade now and cities like Eugene offer pot enthusiasts plenty of places to make the most of their stay. Eugene has 23.61 weed-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents with an affordable average nightly rate of just $174.62.
