The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing fight against drug cultivation and trafficking in Nigeria. In Kogi State, the agency announced the destruction of seven hectares of cannabis farms and the seizure of 369 kilograms of assorted hard drugs, marking another milestone in its nationwide operations.
According to a statement released by the command’s Head of Media and Advocacy, Dahiru Abdullahi, the operation was led by Mr. Umar Yahuza, Commander of the Kogi Strategic Command. Acting on credible intelligence provided by vigilant citizens, NDLEA operatives launched swift raids in the early hours of Thursday, August 25, targeting the Elugu-Egugu forest in Olamaboro Local Government Area. The coordinated action not only uncovered large-scale cannabis farms but also led to the arrest of suspects involved in cultivating and trafficking the illegal crops.
The commander further disclosed that the agency had intercepted multiple shipments of hard drugs passing through Kogi, a state known as a major transit route. Within the month of August alone, the NDLEA seized over 369 kilograms of substances, including cannabis sativa and psychotropic drugs. Such seizures underscore the strategic importance of Kogi in the fight against drug trafficking and the determination of the agency to clamp down on criminal networks.
Highlighting the success of the raids, Yahuza credited the leadership of Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), whose reforms have strengthened intelligence-led operations across the country. He emphasized that the NDLEA’s achievements in Kogi are part of a broader national strategy to dismantle drug syndicates and curb abuse at its roots.
Beyond enforcement, the command is also focusing on prevention through public sensitization campaigns. Working closely with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the NDLEA has taken its anti-drug messages to motor parks, markets, schools, and places of worship. These community outreach programs are designed to educate citizens about the dangers of drug abuse, raise awareness on trafficking, and encourage people to resist involvement in illicit activities.
Yahuza noted that strong community support is critical to sustaining progress. He urged citizens to continue providing timely intelligence that can aid in exposing cannabis farms and drug smuggling routes. By fostering trust and cooperation, the NDLEA believes it can enhance public safety and significantly reduce the drug menace.
This latest operation in Kogi sends a powerful message: the era of unchecked cannabis cultivation and drug trafficking is coming to an end. With dedicated officers, strengthened intelligence, and active community participation, the NDLEA is positioning itself as a formidable force in safeguarding Nigeria’s future from the scourge of drugs.
