PORTLAND (WGME) -- A cannabis vaping product, manufactured and sold in Maine, now faces a recall because it may not be safe.
The state received a complaint from someone who says they had an adverse reaction to the vape.
The vape cartridges were sold between July and October in 21 cannabis stores in Maine, including three in Portland.
Records show the now recalled “Watermelon Chimera” vaping product passed mandatory state testing on July 8, including a negative test for the pesticide chlorfenapyr.
Yet months later, new testing found unsafe levels of the same pesticide.
"How come that a batch passes through mandatory testing, and then it fails later on?" OMG Cannabis Co. Owner Shai Bareket said.
CBS13 asked the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy that same question.
We were told, "OCP has a chemist on staff who monitors for testing discrepancies and works with OCP’s compliance inspectors to investigate any anomalies."
OMG Cannabis Co. in Portland sold 35 vials of the Watermelon Chimera.
Bareket is now contacting those customers.
"If it's truly contaminated and made anyone sick, that's unfortunate and shouldn't happen,” Bareket said. “And I hope to prevent those cases from reoccurring."
The owner of Yani Cannabis, the company that grew and packaged the vape in question, says he spends a lot of time and money to make sure his products are safe.
He also says he doesn't use pesticides.
He knows if he did, his products would never be approved.
