Cannabis use disorder linked to increased cardiovascular disease risk
Study Highlights a 60% Increased Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Individuals with Cannabis Use Disorder.
A study highlights a 60% increased cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with cannabis use disorder, raising concerns about heart attacks, strokes, and related events
A study published in Addiction examined the connection between problematic cannabis use and the onset of initial cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes.
Cannabis use disorder: Research reveals astounding results
Researchers analysed nearly 60,000 Canadian adults, half with cannabis use disorder and a half without, tracking them from 2012 to 2019.
The results indicated that those with cannabis use disorder had a 60% higher likelihood of suffering their first cardiovascular event than those without it.
Risk factors in cardiovascular issues
The study focused on individuals without prior cardiovascular issues and utilised five Canadian health databases.
Participants were matched by gender, birth year, and presentation time to the healthcare system. The cannabis use disorder group had a 2.4% occurrence rate of initial cardiovascular events, while the unexposed group had 1.5%.
Notably, individuals within the cannabis use disorder group who were seemingly healthier, with fewer medical issues, prescriptions, and health service visits, faced a 1.4 times higher risk.
Implications for public health
Lead author Dr. Anees Bahji stressed the significance of the findings. While the study does not conclusively establish causation, it highlights a strong association between cannabis use disorder and increased cardiovascular disease risk among Canadians.
These results are crucial for public health efforts and clinical practice, emphasising the importance of addressing cannabis use disorder as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular health issues.
Increased cardiovascular disease risk: Research needed
This study contributes to the ongoing discussion surrounding cannabis use disorder’s health implications, particularly its potential links to cardiovascular health.
The findings underscore the need for further research and awareness campaigns to inform individuals about the risks associated with cannabis use disorder.
As the dialogue continues, healthcare professionals and policymakers can develop strategies to mitigate these risks and improve the overall health of those affected by cannabis use disorder.
