Florida Lawmakers considering limit on THC in smokable medical marijuana

On March 21, smokable medical cannabis products finally became available in Florida dispensaries. But already, House lawmakers are proposing legislation to limit THC levels in those products. It’s a move that critics say undermines the recent repeal of the ban on smokable medical marijuana. THC limits, they argue, will simply force medical cannabis patients to purchase and smoke more cannabis.

CA Lawmakers to vote on Bill to extend temporary cannabis cultivation licenses

The California Senate is scheduled to vote on Thursday on a bill that would extend temporary licenses for thousands of cannabis cultivators waiting for their permanent license applications to be approved. The measure, Senate Bill 67, was introduced by Democratic Sen. Mike McGuire in January and approved unanimously by a Senate committee the following month.

Nearly 2,000 temporary cannabis cultivation licenses have already expired, with thousands more set to suffer the same fate in the coming months, according to Jacqueline McGowan, the Director of Local Licensing and Business Development at K Street Consulting in Sacramento.

Ex-NFL star Ricky Williams advocates for 'conscious use' of cannabis for athletes

As the NFL considers new guidelines for marijuana use, cannabis entrepreneur and former Miami Dolphins star running back Ricky Williams told Cheddar he's supportive of athletes having access to alternative medications like cannabis.

"I feel especially for football, hockey, soccer ー these really physical games ー I think players should be given any reasonable means to take care of their body, and, in my opinion, conscious use of cannabis is much safer in the long run than the pharmaceuticals that we're currently given," Williams said, adding that there needs to be education and oversight for athletes because cannabis is "easy to abuse."

Many Michigan communities have decided to ban cannabis stores

Nearly 1 in every 8 communities in Michigan have decided not to allow cannabis businesses and retail stores within their limits.

A large number of communities in Michigan decided to opt out of the recreational marijuana market, for now.

Roughly 400 Michigan communities decided that the wording on the ballot was way too liberal for them to allow businesses to operate there.

Namely, the wording on the ballot says that communities can either prohibit businesses entirely or limit the number of licenses available for businesses.

The ballot didn’t clearly define if communities can accept some categories of licenses and reject others, which is why they preventively opted out.

Experts examine health impacts of legalizing medical marijuana in Kansas

As conversation continues in the statehouse, experts are working to understand the impacts of legalizing medical marijuana.

The Kansas Health Institute first conducted a study on the impacts of legalizing medical marijuana back in 2015, but as the conversation of legalizing pot for medical purposes continues to grow, they decided an updated study was necessary.

"The purpose of the study is to really try to understand what would happen in terms of the potential health impacts in the state if this legislation passes," Tatiana Lin, team leader for population health strategy at the Kansas Health Institute, said.

Forty-six states have some kind of legislation in place legalizing medical marijuana. Ten of those states also legalized recreational use for adults.
