$51B spending bill attracts veto threat

The White House on Tuesday threatened to veto a $51.4 billion bill that would fund the Justice and Commerce departments as well as science agencies for fiscal 2016.

“The President's senior advisors would recommend that he veto H.R. 2578 and any other legislation that implements the current Republican budget framework, which blocks the investments needed for our economy to compete in the future,” the White House said.

The measure, according to the veto threat, “drastically underfunds critical investments in research and development.”

On marijuana, Bernie Sanders is kind of a disappointing socialist ex-hippie

Bernie Sanders moved to Vermont in 1968, during a mass "hippie migration" that attracted young people eager for a new life and experimenting with communal living. It's the sort of thing that evokes folk music and drugs, but Sanders wasn't exactly your stereotypical hippie.

In an interview with Yahoo News' Katie Couric, Sanders said he tried marijuana but wasn't a fan.

"Because I coughed a lot, I don't know," he said. "I smoked marijuana twice, didn't quite work for me. ... It's not my thing, but it is the thing of a whole lot of people."

Agents Seize Yacht With 1200 Pounds Of Marijuana

Federal agents near Mission Bay seized a 35-foot yacht returning from Mexico stuffed with nearly 1,200 pounds of marijuana, authorities announced Tuesday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents spotted the yacht while patrolling outside Mission Bay early Friday and took it to a nearby marina for further inspection, according to Jackie Wasiluk, a spokeswoman for the federal agency.

A drug-sniffing dog tipped off U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol agents to 91 packages containing 1,194 pounds of marijuana in hidden compartments throughout the vessel. Wasiluk said the pot was worth an estimated $715,800.

The Most Peaceful Place on Earth

This is where I get my energy to go out and help other Veterans.

Army Veteran Ron Whitcomb thought the Viet Cong were surrounding his house — many years after he came home from Vietnam. Treatment helped him turn a threatening place into a sanctuary.

In observance of PTSD Awareness Month this June, VA’s National Center for PTSD introduces a Veteran who is living with PTSD and is turning his life around with treatment.

“I built my own home — I built it for me,” Whitcomb said. “This is my place to come and rejuvenate. It’s the most peaceful place I know on Earth. This is where I get my energy to go out and help other Veterans.”

Revenue Trends in the I-502 Cannabis Market – in spite of punitive taxes and local obstruction

Overall revenue within the I-502 State-legal Cannabis market continues to steadily increase in a largely consistent (linear) fashion, driven largely by the ever-increasing number of Retail stores licensed by the LCB (154, as of May 18 … with approximately 140 actually open for business). Should the LCB continue to grant retail licenses at the current rate, all 334 allocated stores should be licensed by May 15, 2016.

Marijuana as medicine? Let's decide this by science, not emotion: Stephanie Haynes

Senate Bill 143 will legalize marijuana (cannabinoids) as a medicine and take Louisiana back to  100 years ago, before there was any regulation of medicine by the federal Food and Drug Administration. That regulation has given us the best medicine approval process in the world. All medicines must be proven to be safe and effective by the FDA. SB 143 removes the safeguards that are in our state law that require that cannabinoid medicines meet FDA standards.

Hitting the green? Retail pot stores looking to cash in during U.S. Open

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — The U.S. Open is coming to Chambers Bay in just three weeks, and it means a big boost to our local economy. Local pot shops see the opportunity as well.

With the U.S. Open set to begin on June 15, the greens on Chambers Bay aren`t the only ones getting ready — so are the ones ‘World of Weed’ will soon stock in its shelves.

“We were really pushing to get open for the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay,” said Alden Linn, general manger of World of Weed, a retail pot store expected to open next week.

Retail marijuana stores are one of the many industries expecting to cash in the week of the U.S. Open Championship, a topic Tacoma city leaders even mentioned in an April study session.

Despite Reforms Federal Medical Marijuana Raids Continue In South Lake Tahoe

Remember last year when the United States Congress passed a bill that de-funded medical marijuana raids in states where medical marijuana is legal? And remember when the Obama Administration replaced the head of the D.E.A. because he thought she was out of touch? The Los Angeles Times stated the following when Congress de-funded medical marijuana raids late last year:

Under the provision, states where medical pot is legal would no longer need to worry about federal drug agents raiding retail operations. Agents would be prohibited from doing so.

Legal Marijuana Dealers And The Government Need Bankers And Lawyers

As of today, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medicinal marijuana and four have legalized its recreational use as well. Despite that, marijuana remains a so-called Schedule I controlled substance – alongside “hard” drugs like heroin, cocaine, and LSD – and federal law still makes the distribution of marijuana a crime, even in those states where it is legal.

It is not unusual for legal marijuana businesses to become entangled in government investigations. Although it wasn’t my focus, as a former federal prosecutor I sometimes investigated unlawful drug trafficking organizations. Following the drugs and money back to their source increasingly led to marijuana businesses in states that had legalized it.
