Gov’t shutdown holds up hemp farmers, keeps non-violent drug offenders in jail

Primary schools are being forced to ration vegetables and TSA employees are too “sick” to work airport security without pay– the federal government shutdown is undeniably wreaking havoc on the United States. And the cannabis world is far from immune, either: waterless hemp farmers and non-violent drug offenders stuck in prison are anxiously waiting for Trump’s wall gambit just like the rest of us.

Canopy Growth Corp’s (TSX:WEED) big move into the U.S.: Why investors shouldn’t get too excited

Earlier this week, Canopy Growth Corp  (TSX:WEED)(NYSE:CGC) was given a license to produce hemp in New York State. While it’s a big milestone for a TSX-listed cannabis stock, investors need to temper their expectations. There are, after all, some big limitations, and it’s not going to be able to compete at the same level other U.S. cannabis companies will be able to, especially if the state legalizes recreational use.

Alaska regulators approve rules for onsite marijuana use

Alaska regulators on Thursday approved rules for onsite consumption of marijuana at specially designated shops, a significant step for the cannabis industry in the state after years of debate.

The 3-2 vote by the Marijuana Control Board does not mean people can light up at shops right away.

Rather, interested businesses would have to apply for a special onsite use endorsement and devise plans that would meet ventilation and other standards for onsite use and pass muster with the board.

“It’s not like people are going to be opening these up in the next week,” said Cary Carrigan, the executive director of the Alaska Marijuana Industry Association. Carrigan nonetheless called the vote significant and a positive step.

Canadian organizations band together to fight for craft cannabis

A collective of Canadian organizations will present an open letter to the provincial and federal justice ministers tomorrow morning (May 18) to sound the alarm on regulations that would stifle the country’s craft cannabis industry.

“The timing is good right now because it’s right in the middle of the B.C. Legislative process. We think there is still time to make these changes and make it possible for the B.C. cannabis sector to survive,” says Michael Davis, spokesperson for the Ethical Cannabis Producers Association.

Many 'unknowns' concerning Atlanta's new marijuana law

As a brand new marijuana ordinance takes effect in our state's capital city, reducing the possession penalty to a small fine and no jail time within city limits, legal experts warn there are many gray areas.

One of the state's leading experts on criminal law and youth, J Tom Morgan, said marijuana is the "drug of choice for the millennial generation."

"And, it is very frustrating that I have seen kids whose lives have been ruined, their futures railroaded, because of a conviction for less than an ounce of marijuana," said Morgan, an Albany native who is the former Dekalb County District Attorney and now teaches criminal law at Western North Carolina University.

Marijuana social clubs could become reality in Nevada

A bill allowing local governments to issue permits for marijuana social clubs has passed in the Nevada Senate.

The bill passed 12-9 Tuesday and next will be reviewed by the Assembly, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported (http://bit.ly/2plDbsV ).

The bill was mainly drafted for the tourism industry in Las Vegas. Tourists do not have a safe place to use recreational marijuana, which is legal in Nevada, lawmakers said.

Tourists will soon be able to purchase up to an ounce of marijuana, but will have no place to use it. The law that took effect Jan. 1 makes it so people can only consume pot at a private residence.

"You get to an age where you go to the doctor, you tell him how old you are and he just shrugs his shoulders and says: 'Oh, is that it?'"

Democratic Debate: How High Are The Candidates On Legalizing Marijuana?

As Bernie Sanders continues to cut Hillary Clinton’s lead en route to the Democratic presidential primaries, Martin O’Malley joins his fellow candidates for tonight’s Democratic debate. While the candidates will have plenty to say about very serious issues like health care, immigration, and unemployment, a politician’s stance on the use of medical marijuana and the legalization of recreational pot has become a more common issue of interest. Now that many states are legalizing medicinal (and sometimes recreational) marijuana, and members of Congress are introducing legislation to end the federal prohibition on medical cannabis, it’s a question all candidates must have an answer for.
