Over 150 athletes across sports call for World Anti-Doping Agency to allow medical marijuana

A non-profit group of over 150 current and former athletes is calling for marijuana to be removed form the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited substances list, writes Calvin Hughes.

Medical marijuana legalization is spreading across the US, but most pro-athletes are still prevented from accessing it. That's because most major sports leagues follow drug guidelines set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which bans athletes from using cannabis even outside of competition. Study disputes earlier research suggesting cannabis elevates stroke

A May 2019 study suggests that cannabis use was not an independent ischemic risk factor, contradicting previous research.

Strokes cause approximately 1 out of every 20 deaths in the United States each year, claiming the life of one American every four minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Considering around 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes, which is the result of reduced blood flow to the brain, stroke prevention strategies should target medical and lifestyle risk factors.

The cannabis industry has a swag problem

Is anyone else tired of marketing swag — branded t-shirts and keychains and pens, for example? These freebies have reached astronomical proportions and has even started its own entire multi billion dollar industry turning out quick prints and foam tchotchkes for any old conference, expo, or company picnic imaginable. The cannabis industry is no different, and in fact may be an even worse offender of pawning off unsustainably made and completely random goods just to get their brand out there.
