How to invest in cannabis as the industry matures

Although the legal marijuana industry is still very much an emerging niche for stock market participants, the market for investing in cannabis is maturing.

In a recent sign of how far the legal cannabis sector has come, BlackRock Funds has made substantial investments in dispensary operator Curaleaf Holdings, the same company that also announced it will sell products infused with a non-psychoactive hemp component in CVS Health Corp (NYSE: CVS) stores.

What it's like starting a family business in the cannabis industry

The cannabis plant that we consume is a female plant, writes Diana-Ashley Krach. In cannabis breeding, the "mother plant" is what's used for clippings that turn into clones, which are identical plants that can be grown anywhere. But cannabis is maternal beyond simply bearing offspring; some use the analogy of a mother to describe the plant: she nurtures and heals, and can bring solace to those who need it. When used socially, cannabis brings people together, creates connections, and builds bonds. When used medically, cannabis improves quality of life.

Cannabis careers taking off across the region

Skylar Martin, a 21-year-old from Hollis, New Hampshire, had been struggling to get her career off the ground. Restaurant jobs and a try at massage therapy didn’t click.

A medical marijuana patient in New Hampshire, Ms. Martin knew that cannabis, and connecting with people over its therapeutic benefits, was something she could throw herself into.

She applied for a job at one of The Botanist’s dispensaries in New Hampshire and was referred to its medical marijuana dispensary that opened in December at 65 Pullman St. in Worcester.

Ms. Martin was hired to handle patient intake and counter sales as a technician there. She said she has found her passion.

“I’m a people person,” Ms. Martin said.

Can you donate blood if you smoke weed? Here's what you need to know

It’s well-known that blood is a lifeline—literally—for many Canadians.  What is likely less well-known is whether or not people who use cannabis can donate blood to support that lifeline. Well, the answer is a resounding, “Yes.”

Cannabis and CBD infused products continue to be met with open arms for marijuana stocks

Although much of the attention in the cannabis market has been paid to the companies at the top who are the large producers of the raw substance, it seems as though there is a large amount of potential for the companies working to produce cannabis-infused products and products infused with CBD.

These products have seen a large amount of success in both the medicinal side of the industry as well as the health and wellness sector. As many businesses try to catch up to the potential of this market, it seems as though some players are already reaching the top.

More people try cannabis for the first time when it’s legal

When there’s no need to keep sneaking around, no more looking out for snitches when you slip a dealer some cash, no chance that the cops will kick down the door to your apartment and drag your butt to jail, marijuana, gets a little less intimidating. The drug formerly known as one of the most dangerous substances in the world just becomes, dare we say, kind of boring.

Does cannabis make you mellow or manic? A new genetic test may explain why

About a year ago, the head of a cannabis company approached genetic technology expert John Lem with a problem; why did he have an adverse reaction from pot when everyone else who had smoked the same joint  seemed fine?

So Lem set out to find whether there was a genetic explanation for the different ways people react to THC, and that's how his Toronto-based company Lobo Genetics was born.

"Looking into the science, we came to the conclusion that there is actually a genetic basis for someone's reaction to THC," said Lem.
