CannTrust to enter U.S. CBD market via hemp joint-venture in California

CannTrust Holdings Inc. (TRST.TO) plans to enter the U.S. market for CBD, starting with a hemp production joint-venture in California, it said on Wednesday.

The Vaughan, Ont.-based licensed producer has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Elk Grove Farming Company to secure hemp with high cannabidiol (CBD), the non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis and hemp.

Under the deal, the joint-venture will secure a long-term lease for more than 3,000 acres of farmland designated for hemp production in Southern California. It adds that it will process, formulate and sell hemp-derived CBD products.

This is the "first step" in CannTrust's development of "full-scale" U.S. operations, the company said.

Why CBD & THC are like fruits and veggies

A healthy diet means having the whole variety. It means having a wide range of foods for the complete range of vitamins and nutrients.

But a healthy diet also means having cannabinoids like THC & CBD.

As humans, we naturally produce cannabinoids in our bodies. In fact, all animals produce cannabinoids and have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which interacts with cannabinoids to regulate our pain, inflammation, immune systems, mood and thinking.

So just like vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, cannabinoids may be just as essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Should the legal age for marijuana use be 25?

A recent opinion piece in The New York Times by Dr. Kenneth L. Davis and Dr. Mary Jeanne Kreek is making waves in the cannabis community and beyond. In the piece, the doctors attempt to make the case that the legal age for marijuana use should be set by the government at 25.

While reading the good doctors’ thoughts on the subject, three major problems became obvious:

Is corporate cannabis taking over the industry?

In California, where Prop. 64 was expected to protect small-business owners, many are being pushed out by ‘Big Cannabis’.

The legal industry in the Golden state is growing exponentially. Last year it was valued at $2.51 billion, making it the largest cannabis market in not just the US, but the entire world. There are also an estimated 64,000 people are employed in the California cannabis industry. Prior to adult-use legalization, most of the dispensaries were mom and pop shops that were owned and operated by families, individuals, or a few select business partners.

Cannabis and mental health: Postpartum depression

“You live nine months with this little person inside of you. You go everywhere together. You’re never alone. The little person starts to move and hiccup and kick you. You know this little person. He is a part of you,”  explains one mother who asked not to use her name.

“But then, he’s just gone. You’re alone. Part of your soul was just ripped from your body, and you’re never going to get it back.  Yes, I can hold my sons, hear their heartbeats, but they aren’t physically a part of me anymore. For me, this brought on a crushing wave of loneliness, abandonment and shame that I never could’ve anticipated. This was a new level of hell for me.”
