Homegrown – The Cannabis Market in Ireland

Amid the recent legalisation of medicinal cannabis, there have been calls for a removal of the ban on recreational use. Mary Meadbh Park looks at the state of the market in Dublin.

BOB Marley famously said that: “herb is the healing of the nation, alcohol is the destruction.” Since his day, cannabis has risen in popularity worldwide, including in Ireland. The growing increase of users has created a thriving market for the plant, particularly in Dublin.

It is seldom now that a walk around the city centre on a weekend night will not bring up that all-too-familiar aroma at least once. This, of course, begs the question: “who is smoking it?” and most importantly, “where did they get it?”

Ireland: Report Recommends Use of Medicinal Cannabis

A report to be published later today is to recommend that medicinal cannabis be made available to patients with specified medical conditions.

It is among a number of recommendations contained in the Cannabis for Medical Use report, which is to be published by Minister for Health Simon Harris.

The report makes eight recommendations and was compiled by the Health Products Regulatory Authority.

It states that cannabis has potential therapeutic benefits, but there is a need for robust evidence to be generated through clinical research in patients.

7 Observations From Using Hemp Oil Every Day for Three Months

By now you’ve probably heard of cannabidiol (CBD), an active ingredient in cannabis that, unlike the rest of the plant, is legal in the UK.

Some people who have suffered strokes, cancer, depression, anxiety and general aches and pains have reported positive effects after using CBD, and the NHS is reportedly doing research into the compound with plans to officially class it as a medicine.

Until that happens UK citizens are free to buy CBD in its various forms online, something I first did a few months back and have been grateful for ever since.

Here are some observations from taking CBD orally every day for three months to help combat anxiety and sleep issues.

Irish Government Report Makes Medicinal Cannabis Recommendations

The Oireachtas Health Committee has recommended that the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) ensure improved access to medicinal cannabis products.

In a report, published this month, the Houses of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health has evaluated medicinal cannabinoids, and, with medicinal cannabis legalisation imminent in the Republic of Ireland, made a range of expert recommendations.

Dr Michael Harty TD, who chaired the committee, prefaced the report with the following description:

This report offers background to the status of medicinal cannabis and cannabinoids and highlights both the risks and potential benefits of those products.

Majority of Irish GPs Support Medicinal Cannabis

The Irish College of General Practitioners says efforts to legalise cannabis for therapeutic use could begin within 12 - 24 months.

A new survey has found a substantial majority of Irish family doctors support the legalisation of cannabis for medicinal use.

However, according to the same survey, more than half of Irish GPs do not support the decriminalisation of the drug for recreational use.

Over 60% of the doctors surveyed agreed that cannabis can have a role in palliative care, pain management and the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) - with 58.6% coming out in support of the legalisation of the drug for medicinal use.

A writer’s challenge to politicians over medical cannabis

I will enter an experiment: a politician can take my usual cocktail of drugs for a week and I’ll take medical cannabis and let’s see which of us comes out in the best shape

For almost 50 years now I’ve suffered from a debilitating, often crippling and painful condition called Still’s Disease, a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis which strikes children. I contracted the disease at 12 years of age. When I search for an image for the condition I imagine “a hard winter of the bones”.

Boy's epileptic fits stop after he visits US and uses cannabis

Doctors are successfully using cannabis to treat a schoolboy with an ‘uncontrollable’ form of epilepsy.

Billy Caldwell, 11, from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland has been suffering frequent and life-threatening seizures for almost all his life.

But he’s gone 15 days without a fit after doctors in Los Angeles started giving him daily doses of cannabis oil to swallow.

His mother Charlotte, who flew to the US with him now hopes politicians in the UK will legalise the drug for medicinal use.

‘Billy isn’t sitting smoking joints, obviously, he gets daily syringes of the oil into his mouth – and the results speak for themselves,’ said Charlotte.

Medical Cannabis Gets a Hearing in the EU Parliament

On the 30th of November, politicians from the European Parliament gathered with a range of patients, activists, campaigners, entrepreneurs and scientists from the European cannabis community to discuss the future of the industry at the inaugural International Conference on Medical Cannabis.

The event was organised by the European United Left/Nordic Green Left European Parliamentary Group, led by German MEP Stefan Eck and Greek MEP Stelios Kouloglou.

The aim of the Conference was to share knowledge about the state of legislation around the world today, and to educate regulators present about the importance of building legal, regulated cannabis markets in Europe.
