More than $205.4 million in cannabis taxes collected in Illinois as nonprofits receive first round of grants

About $31 million from adult-use cannabis taxes is going to nonprofits in Illinois as part of the Restore, Reinvest and Renew, or R3 program, and it’s not all going to Chicago.

Cannabis sales for January neared $90 million. Since adult-use sales began in January 2020, nearly $757.9 million in cannabis has been sold. The taxes on that can be more than 40%, depending on the potency and whether a local sales tax is added on to the state taxes.

For the state’s taxes, the total collected from January 2020 through last month totaled more than $205.4 million dollars.

Home grown? Medical cannabis companies mostly out-of-state

Once again, out-of-state business entities and owners took the majority of dispensary and processor permits for West Virginia’s long-awaited medical cannabis program.

Last week, the Department of Health and Human Resources’ Office of Medical Cannabis announced that 100 dispensaries between 32 companies with locations in 23 counties had been selected. The Office of Medical Cannabis announced the selection of 10 growers in October 2020 and 10 processors in November 2020.

Lawmaker pushes to create new pot shop licenses — just weeks after similar effort went up in smoke

Amid uproar over the state’s troubled efforts to issue new cannabis licenses, state Rep. La Shawn Ford on Wednesday said he introduced a “shell bill” that will ultimately be used to create as many as 110 additional dispensary permits.

The Chicago Democrat filed the legislation last Wednesday and now plans to add language that would create the new licenses. The proposal is similar to a bill that cleared the Senate but ultimately went up in smoke during last month’s lame duck session.

Illinois' cannabis licensing lottery ‘complete failure’ says minority access committee co-chair

Some lawmakers in Illinois are being critical of the governor’s attempt to distribute cannabis dispensary licenses, calling it inequitable.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s license distribution plan involves a scoring system and lottery that some believe shuts out minorities.

State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, calls out the system, saying it put minorities at a disadvantage and needs to be rethought, as reported by NPR.
