Medical Marijuana Reform Dying in Florida

The clock for Florida is finally running down, and unless a miracle happens by Friday, it looks like the voters will get the last say on the issue of medical marijuana. With only a handful of days left in the legislative session, there is little hope of any marijuana bill passing the legislature; although, Republican Sen. Rob Bradley still remains hopeful.

“I promised those families that I would fight to the end, and we still have a few days left in session,” Bradley told the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m going to continue to try to find any avenue to make sure we deliver on that promise we made to them last year.”

Medical marijuana amendment could sway 2016 presidential election

If the Florida Legislature fails to pass a medical marijuana bill this session the issue is almost certain to resurface as a proposed constitutional amendment in 2016. A similar amendment narrowly failed in 2014. However, it is widely believed that in a presidential election cycle (when Democrats in Florida turn out by 4-6 percent more than in non-presidential election cycles) a medical marijuana amendment will pass.

The real question may not be whether a medical marijuana amendment will pass (recent polls show medical marijuana is supported by 70 percent of Floridians) but whether such an amendment will impact the 2016 presidential election.

Charlotte’s Web hearing to enter second day, glitch bill still on Senate calendar

A potential Florida medical marijuana grower is getting every opportunity to make its case in court.

Baywood Nurseries of Apopka insists the proposed rule to enact the 2014 Charlotte’s Web law by the Florida Department of Health is unfair to smaller nurseries, blocking them from applying for one of the five licenses available to grow marijuana.

The DOH response: Baywood has no case.

“We shouldn’t be here for a hearing and another delay,” protested DOH lawyerEduardo Lombard.

Business opportunities abound in medical marijuana — if you can figure out all the laws

The blue states have legalized marijuana for only medical purposes, while the red states have legalized it for both medical and recreational purposes. In all, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form.

It's been almost 20 years since the first state legalized medical marijuana, but conflicting regulations between the states and the lack of federal direction on its rules and regulations have left the industry fractured and stunted.

Viable medical marijuana program a must

Last November's push to bring medical marijuana to Florida came up short. Amendment 2 just missed the 60 percent threshold, but advocates believe they'll do better in 2016.

They certainly don't have much faith in their elected officials. Even though the Florida Legislature passed a limited form of medical marijuana use in 2014, the state never put the program into effect. No wonder the push is on to let voters decide at the ballot.

Pet cannabis raises questions about hemp's legality in Florida

Joy Drawdy has an emergency arrest plan.

If the police come, she’ll call her lawyer. She’ll send her friend to care for her store. She’ll have her partner care for her cats, dogs and chickens.

But she hasn’t had to use it — yet.

Drawdy, 45, and her partner, Kat, own Earth Pets, a Gainesville pet store that not only sells soy dog collars and organic pet treats, but it also shelters homeless kittens in a community kitten therapy room.

But the emergency arrest plan is for a product she sells, called CannaVet, formerly known as Canna Companion during the summer.

CannaVet is an herbal supplement for pets with problems like anxiety, seizures and allergies. The problem lies in its main ingredient: hemp.
