Florida nurseries wanting to grow medical marijuana to begin applying

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —

Nurseries across Florida can begin submitting their applications to grow medical marijuana on Wednesday.

The state plans to chose five nurseries that will be allowed to grow marijuana to produce Charlotte's Web, a special oil form of medical marijuana.

But Channel 9 found out that the process to apply is so intense that it could take six more months before the nurseries are growing anything.

Gov. Rick Scott signed the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act in June 2014, but Charlotte's Web is still not available.

"You're growing a whole new industry in Florida and these things don't come easily," said Louis Rotundo, with the Florida Medical Cannabis Association.

Marijuana Grower Licenses Available in Florida

In June of last year Florida Governor Rick Scott signed into law a bill that legalizes the use of low-potency marijuana for medical purposes. On Wednesday of this week the state will begin accepting applications from parties interested in being one of five legal regional growing operations in the state.

It won’t be cheap or easy, though. The application fee is $60,063 and the state’s Department of Health will be accepting applications for just three weeks. Applicants also need to have been in the nursery business in Florida continuously for the past 30 years.

John Morgan Writes a “Big Check” to get Medical Marijuana Amendment 2.0 Up and Running

John Morgan just wrote a “big check” to get a second medical marijuana ballot initiative off the ground.

And a big check it was. $150,000.

“I’m going to do whatever it takes to put medical marijuana back to the people of Florida to make it your decision,” Morgan said in a video statement posted on the website for his group, United for Care.

Morgan said it won’t be the last check he writes, but implores supporters to write their own big checks.

The funding will go first toward paying for a massive petition drive to gather enough signatures statewide to force another constitutional amendment in 2016. Once ballot language is finalized campaign funds will pay for key advertisements and educational outreach dispelling messages from critics.

Florida: Legal low-potency marijuana industry will be an experiment

Florida officially opens up to the legal marijuana cultivation industry this week, but it will be for the low-potency drug and it won’t be cheap for anyone wanting to get into the business.

Following an administrative law judge’s ruling June 1 that dismissed a challenge to Florida’s “Charlotte’s Web” law, the path has been cleared to allow limited low-THC marijuana growing operations in Florida. The original state law was drafted by state Sen. Rob Bradley, R-Fleming Island, and signed by Gov. Rick Scott about a year ago.

For Bradley, the elimination of the legal challenges is a relief. He says he simply wanted the low-potency pot to help people, mainly children, suffering from epilepsy and cancer and the side effects of treatment.

Florida: Are You Ready to Legalize Medical Marijuana in 2016?

While the state of Florida continues to pussyfoot around with the implementation of a CBD-only law, the stage is being set to to legalize a full-scale medical marijuana program in 2016. United For Care, whose proposal to legalize the leaf for medicinal purposes failed by a narrow margin in last year’s November election, is now preparing to launch the second coming of the initiative in hopes of bringing medicinal herb to the Sunshine State once and for all.

JACKSONVILLE wants say in medical marijuana business location

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The city has taken steps to make sure it will have a say in where legal medical marijuana could be sold in Jacksonville.

Starting next month, the state will start taking applications from businesses that want to start growing and distributing marijuana. Only five locations will be selected, one for each section of the state. If one of those chosen businesses is in Jacksonville, the city wants the right to say where it could go.

City leaders just passed an ordinance that puts a 180-day moratorium on any plan to locate a marijuana distributor or store in Jacksonville, until the City Council and the zoning office and city lawyers come up with a plan to say where it could be located.
