This company is the first to legally ship hemp across state lines by rail in 84 years

The first shipment of legal hemp to cross state lines in the U.S. by railroad in 84 years departed from California, fittingly, on 4/20.

Approximately 17,000 pounds (7,700 kilograms) of hemp, grown at the 550-acre Golden State Hemp farm in Fresno, Calif., was shipped by Union Pacific rail to the company’s research lab in Denver, Colo.

‚ÄúToday‚Äôs first shipment by rail is another goal in our company mission of ‚ÄėChanging the world one acre at a time,‚Äô‚ÄĚ Jeff Friedland, co-founder and CEO of Golden State Hemp, said¬†in a release.

Hemp in Australia‚ÄĒA Secret History

The discovery in 1964 of 500 acres of cannabis growing wild along the banks of the Hunter River inspired a new generation of pot smokers in Australia. But the history of the crop is much older, dating back to the early 1800s, when Britain sent debtors and convicts to start the first hemp colony Down Under. From the November, 1995 issue of High Times comes an excerpt of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, by Jack Herer and John Jiggens, about the little-known history of hemp in Australia.

With 135 tons of food seed and a growing amount of hemp fiber imported every year, Sweden has the basis for a strong national hemp industry, stakeholders suggest. But the market can thrive and benefit Swedish companies only if hemp gains wider recognition and rules become clear.

USDA Agency Exploring Hemp ‚ÄúCosmeceuticals‚ÄĚ

An agency of the US Department of Agriculture is teaming up with an Illinois based firm to potentially expand the market for products made from hemp seed oil.

The cooperative research and development agreement between Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists and the Midwest Bioprocessing Center focuses on a patented process already developed by the pair called bio-catalysis. This involves using enzymes and heat rather than chemicals to catalyze reactions binding natural antioxidants such as ferulic acid to lipids in plant-based oils.

Push For Hemp To Be Displayed In U.S. Botanic Garden

Several members of Congress have submitted a formal request that the U.S. Botanic Garden include hemp plants in its display.

The United States Botanic Garden (USBG) was established by Congress in 1820 and is the oldest continuously operating botanic garden in the country. Covering 150 acres, it host tens of thousands of plants, some of them rare.

Missing from its collection is hemp. While in the past this may have been due to its previous legal status, hemp was fully legalized for commercial production in the 2018 Farm Bill. While both forms of cannabis, hemp is distinguished from marijuana based on levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with hemp required to contain no more than 0.3% THC.

How to Stock up and save on Marijuana and Hemp Cultivation Supplies

Cannabis growers need to have an adequate supply of materials on hand once planting season rolls around. They can’t scramble at the last minute to find necessary fertilizer, growing materials or anything else. Not only will that slow their operation, but it also could lead to ill-advised purchases for too-high prices or buying something cultivators don’t really want.

‚ÄúGrow inputs are like commodities, so commercial growers that shop early and buy in bulk will realize the greatest savings,‚ÄĚ said Ryan Douglas, a Florida-based cannabis consultant and former master grower at Tweed, a major cannabis producer with headquarters in Ontario, Canada.

Kansas Prepares For First ‚ÄúCommercial‚ÄĚ Industrial Hemp Season

rows of marijuana plants

The Kansas Department of Agriculture will begin accepting industrial hemp grower applications from January 8.

Up to this point, the only pathway for growing industrial hemp in the state was through a license issued under the state’s Industrial Hemp Research Program.

Governor of Kansas Laura Kelly signed the Senate Substitute for House Bill 2167, which established the state’s Commercial Industrial Hemp Program, back in April 2019. But first a plan needed to be developed and approved at a Federal level in order to comply with the requirements of the 2018 Farm Bill. Meanwhile, 2019 was the first year that hemp could be grown in the state under the 2014 Farm Bill enabled pilot. 213 growers’ licenses were issued for around 5,700 acres.
