Tennessee’s Hemp-Heavy History

hemp field

The state of Tennessee has a rich past — and promising future — with the cash crop

Tennessee has been a hemp state for a lot longer than it hasn’t been one.

The versatile plant was already a major cash crop in the United States by the time Tennessee joined the union in 1796, and pioneer families who’d had success with it brought it across the Applachians from Virginia and the Carolinas. Producing hemp was critical at a time when ships were the primary conveyances of commerce, as its tough fibers are perfect for making sails and lines, and farmers could cash in with both government and private commercial supply contracts.

Hawaii Interim Hemp Rules In Effect

hemp field

Hawaii’s Department of Health last week adopted interim rules for hemp processors and products – and not everyone is happy.

The rules, which came into effect on August 9, prohibit a bunch of hemp-derived products including:

  • Hemp products for oral consumption other tablet, capsule, powder, softgel, gelcap or liquid form
  • Foods and beverages containing CBD and other cannabinoids.
  • Eliquids for vaping
  • Products for smoking
  • Products that are administered via non-oral routes.

Additionally, products must be tested by a qualified lab and there are various other regulatory and record-keeping requirements needing to be observed.

Hemp Prices Continue To Fall

July 2021 saw record-setting temperatures in parts of the country, alarming spikes in Delta variant Covid infections, and large numbers of Americans returning to summer vacationing after having last summer’s dreams of ocean breezes and lakeshore barbecues dashed by the pandemic. It was also a notable, if not promising month for hemp. Hemp Benchmarks, a division of New Leaf Data Services and leading provider of financial, business, and industry data for the North American hemp markets, recently issued its report for July, which touches on some of the most high-profile talking points of the hemp market to date.

Hempen Has Had It With UK Hemp Licensing

hemp field

A UK hemp cooperative that had to destroy its own crop two years ago is fighting back against what it says is a licensing regime with no obvious public benefit.

Hempen has operated its own farm at Hardwick Estate in Oxfordshire since 2015. While not currently growing hemp at this site, it has been collaborating with other organic farmers since 2016.

The reason hemp isn’t grown at the Oxfordshire site?

Study: “Hot Hemp” Just A Matter Of Genetics

tending hemp plans

A new study has found hemp that goes “hot” – over legally permitted THC levels – is likely just down to genetics rather than environmental stressors also playing a role.

Most jurisdictions around the world have set levels for how high THC can be in cannabis before it is no longer legally considered hemp and it becomes marijuana. For farmers, this is a very big deal. A crop that goes over whatever level is likely to be destroyed and the farmer may face legal action.

Hemp farmers seek strains that produce crops coming under the maximum permitted THC level, but this doesn’t always work out. One of the factors believed to push a crop above are environmental stressors such as extreme heat.

History’s lost cash crop: The state of hemp in Iowa

marijuana leaf on money

As a close cousin to marijuana, hemp was swiftly and severely regulated and restricted with the passing of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970. A part of Nixon’s “War on Drugs,” it placed cannabinoids like marijuana and hemp in the most dangerous category: “Schedule 1,” the most addictive substances with the least evidence of health benefits. That’s right alongside heroin, and above cocaine and meth.

Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis plants, but they are classified differently based on one important chemical—THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the intoxicating compound in cannabis that causes a high when introduced to the body. Hemp contains 0.3% or less of this chemical, making it non-intoxicating. Marijuana, however, can contain up to 30%.

Australian Research On Cannabis Entourage Effect

hemp leaves and oil

Research out of Australia is indicating the “entourage effect” associated with medicinal cannabis is likely really a thing.

So, what is the entourage effect?

Coined by Israeli researchers in the late 1990’s, the entourage effect describes medical cannabis treatment efficacy not being limited to a specific cannabinoid such as THC or CBD, but multiple compounds working together producing a therapeutic effect. These compounds aren’t just cannabinoids, but also terpenes – aromatic chemicals.

There are many who accept the entourage effect exists, but to this point scientific evidence to support it has been scant.
