Existing Greenhouse Growers Taking Big Interest in the Cannabis Market

An increasing number of growers in traditional horticultural markets are looking into the burgeoning cannabis industry and deciding whether or not they want to take part.

20.7% of North American greenhouse growers stated they are either already planning on growing cannabis or plan to investigate growing it in the next few years, according to a 2017 survey conducted by Greenhouse Grower magazine.

With the promise of legal recreational marijuana in Canada by July 2018, greenhouse growers who are already equipped with crop growing knowledge are now educating themselves on both the profit potential and the considerations that need to be made in order to compete in the ever-expanding cannabis market.

The Real Reason Craft Cannabis is Here to Stay

Nothing evokes passionate debate in the cannabis community like the threat of big business taking over. The arguments against big marijuana fill the internet. The heartfelt plea to preserve small farms is echoed throughout the US, Canada, and Jamaica. At the Marijuana Business Conference in Las Vegas last November there was even a debate dedicated to arguing which was better: Craft Cannabis vs Big Marijuana.

But this should never have been an either or statement. Is Big Business with Big Money going to jump in on the Marijuana Green Rush? Absolutely! Is that the beginning of the end of small craft farmers? Not in a million years!

Canada's Framework for the Legalization and Regulation of Cannabis and What It Means to Growers

The Canadian government has released the November 2016 report that was filed in Ottawa by the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation.  This report contains the findings and official recommendations of the task force for establishing legal cannabis across Canada.

In total the document contains 112 pages and covers issues from cultivation licenses, to processing, and distribution to taxation and home growing. Everyone interested in cannabis as an industry or as a medicine should read this document.

For growers I have summarized the main points that the Task Force recommends:

The Great Marijuana Greenhouse Debate

Retrofit existing greenhouses or is it better to purpose build greenhouses for marijuana growing?

Just before the election I read an article about California pot growers paying millions of dollars for old greenhouses in the Salinas Valley. After the results of the US marijuana elections greenhouse property values are likely increasing in eastern states like Massachusetts and Maine as much as they are in the West.

Marijuana Home Explosions Should Be a Call for Legal Regulation, Not Justification for Anti-Marijuana Sentiment

I opened up my news feed from the weekend last night and found a flurry of stories from around the world discussing how an illegal marijuana grow destroyed a New York City home and killed a firefighter. Illegal grow-ops may resort to tactics that can be fatal in an effort to hide their activities, and without legal status they do not have access to education and equipment that meets safety standards. Of course, that is not how the international media portrays it:
