TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Police Officer Jeremy Berndt has officially been terminated from the Toledo Police Department following a criminal investigation and legal proceedings related to purchasing marijuana while on duty. The department confirmed on June 13 that Berndt's employment was ended, six months after initial charges were filed.
Berndt, who had served with the department, entered an Alford plea on June 3 to a charge of attempting to commit an offense. The plea followed his original charge of dereliction of duty in January, stemming from accusations that he purchased marijuana while in full uniform, carrying a department-issued firearm, and driving a marked police vehicle.
An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain their innocence while accepting that the prosecution has sufficient evidence to likely secure a conviction. Though it is not a direct admission of guilt, it is treated by the court system as a guilty plea. This legal strategy is often used to avoid the potential of harsher penalties at trial.
A judge found Berndt guilty after accepting the Alford plea. He is scheduled to return to court on June 25 for sentencing.
The incident has sparked concern and disappointment from both the public and the Toledo Police Department’s leadership. Chief Michael Troendle issued a strong statement underscoring the importance of accountability and integrity within the police force.
“It is an understatement to say that I was disappointed when I was informed that one of our officers was being investigated for criminal conduct,” Chief Troendle said. “The community places great trust in the over 600 sworn officers of the Toledo Police Department to abide by and uphold the law.
This incident highlights the ongoing importance of maintaining transparency and public trust in law enforcement. While the majority of officers serve with dedication and integrity, situations like this can cast a shadow over the department’s reputation.
The Toledo Police Department’s swift response and ultimate decision to terminate Berndt demonstrate a commitment to upholding standards and reinforcing that no one, regardless of position, is above the law.
As the community awaits the outcome of Berndt’s sentencing later this month, the department continues its efforts to ensure accountability and rebuild trust with the public.
