Haverhill’s cannabis landscape has come a long way in five years, and at the center of that transformation is Stem, the city’s first adult-use cannabis shop. Located at 124 Washington Street, Stem recently marked a significant milestone—its fifth anniversary—with a four-day celebration that highlighted not just its success, but its deep roots in the community.

On Friday, May 30, owner Caroline Pineau stood under a festive arch of colorful balloons, ribbon-cutting scissors in hand, surrounded by customers, dignitaries, and supporters. The occasion was more than a party—it was a recognition of resilience, perseverance, and a vision brought to life.

The event drew praise from notable figures including Bruce Stebbins, Acting Chair of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission. “This is a business that is not easy to get into or to sustain,” Stebbins said. “And the license comes with an obligation to give back to the community. Clearly Stem is doing that. Congratulations.”

Pineau, visibly emotional and proud, addressed the crowd with heartfelt gratitude. “We’ve grown with this city and we are honored to be part of the downtown community,” she said. “We want to thank our customers and community for supporting a small business with big dreams.”

The celebration wasn’t just reflective—it was forward-looking. Pineau unveiled a vibrant floral mural in the front lobby by Boston-based artist Hailey Bonia, a symbol of the store’s creativity and commitment to aesthetic experience. Guests also got a sneak peek of the shop’s future: unfinished second and third floors that will soon become something much more.

Thanks to a $500,000 Cannabis Social Equity Grant, Pineau and her husband and co-owner Adam Pineau are planning a major expansion. Their vision? A state-of-the-art social consumption center featuring a rooftop lounge, smoothie and juice bar, golf simulators, and educational programming. It’s a bold step toward redefining what cannabis retail can offer.

The proposed expansion reflects more than business growth—it’s about accessibility and inclusion. Plans include a new elevator and staircase to bring the 1882-era building up to ADA compliance, a move that underscores the Pineaus’ commitment to welcoming all members of the community.

Looking ahead, the couple is exploring the possibility of an alcohol license, with separate spaces in compliance with state law. With permit applications underway, Stem’s future looks just as promising as its past.

As the crowd cheered and music played, it was clear this celebration was not just about surviving five years—it was about thriving, innovating, and giving back. Stem is more than a cannabis shop—it’s a Haverhill success story in full bloom.
