A 22-year-old New York father has been sentenced to 24 months of probation after authorities in Pennsylvania discovered a marijuana-laced birthday cake and drug paraphernalia in a parked vehicle where he was accompanied by two minors. The case, announced by Bradford County District Attorney Richard Wilson on July 6, highlights ongoing concerns about child safety and responsible cannabis use.
The investigation began in November 2024 when Athens Township Police Officer Thomas J. VanFleet Jr. responded to a suspicious vehicle report. Inside the parked car, officers found Rylan Matthew Manuel LaForest of Lockwood, New York, along with his 21-month-old daughter and a 14-year-old boy. During the search, police discovered multiple items associated with marijuana use.
According to the official statement, officers recovered marijuana grinders, rolling papers, a magnetic-lid container, several empty containers with the odor of marijuana, clear plastic bags, and a digital scale. Most notably, they found a marijuana-infused birthday cake with LaForest’s name written on it, further suggesting his direct involvement in the possession and potential consumption of the drug.
While LaForest was not charged with driving under the influence, police emphasized the presence of marijuana and drug paraphernalia within close proximity to the two children. Authorities noted that there was no evidence to suggest that LaForest was actively impaired or had been operating the vehicle while under the influence.
LaForest was ultimately charged with Corruption of Minors, a charge that applies when an adult is found to be endangering or negatively influencing the welfare of a child. The 24-month probation sentence reflects the court's decision to hold LaForest accountable without imposing jail time, while still addressing the seriousness of the offense.
This case underscores the importance of responsible cannabis use, especially around children. As marijuana laws continue to evolve across the United States, law enforcement and child protection agencies remain vigilant about the risks posed when minors are exposed to cannabis or its byproducts.
