Patients Plead: Cannabis Commission Fails Again

Written by Buzz | Oct 1, 2025 11:21:45 AM

The Nebraska cannabis commission is facing serious challenges after two commissioners resigned at the request of Governor Jim Pillen. The resignations come at a critical time, as the cannabis commission was required by statute to begin issuing registrations to cultivators, manufacturers, transporters, and dispensaries. With the deadline missed, stakeholders across the state are questioning how the cannabis commission will move forward.

Resignations Shake the Cannabis Commission

Former commissioners Bruce Bailey and Kim Lowe were key members of the three-person evaluation team that reviewed applications from cannabis businesses. Their departure left the cannabis commission unable to complete evaluations before the deadline. Bailey, in particular, had been a vocal supporter of expanding cannabis cultivation and pushing for broader regulations. Advocates say his absence leaves the cannabis commission without an important voice of reason and balance.

The governor has not provided specific reasons for requesting their resignations, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the cannabis commission and its ability to fulfill its statutory obligations.

Missed Deadlines and Public Frustration

By law, the cannabis commission was expected to begin handing out registrations to businesses across the cannabis supply chain. However, with only partial evaluations completed, applications were delayed. The missed deadline has caused frustration among both industry stakeholders and patients awaiting access to regulated products. Critics argue the cannabis commission had months to prepare and should have anticipated the importance of meeting the statutory timeline.

Advocates at recent meetings stressed the urgency of medical cannabis availability, with some patients saying their lives depend on timely access. As one critic put it, “How many times do we have to walk down the same road of begging for our lives?” This underscores the weight of responsibility the cannabis commission carries for nearly 630,000 Nebraskans who support medical cannabis reform.

Next Steps for the Cannabis Commission

Despite the missed deadline, the cannabis commission has stated it will begin issuing registrations as early as next week. In addition, a public hearing on the proposed rules and regulations is scheduled for October 15 at the State Office Building. This hearing will give citizens the chance to provide input and hold the cannabis commission accountable for its decisions.

Final Thoughts

The future of Nebraska’s medical cannabis program rests heavily on the effectiveness of the cannabis commission. With new appointments pending and public scrutiny rising, the cannabis commission must regain credibility and prove it can meet deadlines, fairly evaluate applications, and deliver on the promise of a safe, regulated medical cannabis market.
