Atlantic City has long been known for its glittering casinos, iconic boardwalk, and beachfront fun. Now, it’s adding something entirely new to its list of attractions: cannabis lounges.
In a historic move for New Jersey, the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission recently approved the operation of four cannabis consumption lounges. Two of these cannabis lounges are located right in the heart of Atlantic City—SunnyTien and High Rollers—with others opening in Newark and Merchantville.
These lounges are more than just a place to smoke. They’re designed as community hubs where adults 21 and over can legally and safely consume cannabis in a social setting. For just $5, visitors can gain 30-minute access, or opt for an annual pass at $1,200. The lounges are strictly alcohol-free, with bars instead stocked with glass water pipes, grinders, and high-end vaporizers.
“We’ve got TVs, music, karaoke nights, trivia, Mario Kart—it’s not just about cannabis, it’s about creating an experience,” said Spencer Belz, Chief Operating Officer of SunnyTien Dispensary and Lounge on Atlantic Avenue. With stylish décor, plush seating, and the unmistakable scent of cannabis in the air, these cannabis lounges offer a vibe unlike any other entertainment venue in town.
Customers must purchase cannabis products on-site unless they hold a state-issued medical marijuana card, in which case they may bring their own. According to many visitors and industry insiders, the launch of cannabis lounges is a long-awaited step toward destigmatizing cannabis use and normalizing the plant in everyday social life.
Even the state's cannabis regulators see this development as a major turning point. “These designated spaces provide consumers with safe and legal options for cannabis consumption,” noted NJ Cannabis Commission Chairwoman Dianna Houenou.
For locals like Travis Dauria of Ocean View, cannabis lounges are a welcome addition. “I’m not into alcohol, but I love to unwind with a joint after work. Now I have a place where I can do that comfortably and safely.”
With growing interest in cannabis tourism, many believe that Atlantic City is on track to become the cannabis capital of the East Coast. As Belz put it, “Anyone not seeing that Atlantic City is becoming a cannabis hub just isn’t paying attention.”
