A dramatic arrest unfolded early Sunday morning when a gold miner was taken into custody at the Police Checkpoint in Corkwood, Regional Division Nine (Upper Takutu–Upper Essequibo). Law enforcement officials reported that the 43-year-old gold miner, who hails from Providence, East Bank Demerara, was found with significant quantities of suspected cocaine and cannabis during a routine stop.

According to reports, ranks stationed at the Corkwood Police Checkpoint were carrying out standard inspections around 07:45 hrs when they intercepted a minibus traveling from Georgetown to Lethem. The gold miner, who was among the passengers, appeared nervous as officers initiated a search. Inside his haversack, officers discovered several plastic bags containing substances suspected to be narcotics.

When weighed in the gold miner’s presence, the substances totaled approximately 491.7 grams of cocaine and 1009.7 grams of cannabis. Officers at the Police Checkpoint immediately sealed and marked the suspected drugs as exhibits, ensuring proper chain of custody. The arrest highlights the vital role of the Police Checkpoint in combating drug trafficking along major transit routes between Georgetown and Lethem.

Authorities noted that the gold miner was promptly informed of the offences committed before being taken into custody. He remains detained as the investigation continues. The Police Checkpoint team emphasized that regular road operations have proven instrumental in intercepting illegal narcotics, firearms, and other contraband being moved across regional boundaries.

Sources indicate that the gold miner offered no resistance during his arrest. He was transported from the Police Checkpoint to a nearby police station, where he was processed and placed under guard. Law enforcement officials praised the alertness and professionalism of the officers manning the Police Checkpoint, noting that their vigilance continues to disrupt criminal networks operating in remote border regions.

The Corkwood Police Checkpoint, positioned along a critical transport artery, remains one of the most active enforcement points in Regional Division Nine.

The arrest of the gold miner underscores the importance of maintaining well-coordinated Police Checkpoint operations throughout Guyana’s interior. As the probe continues, authorities reaffirm their commitment to keeping narcotics off the streets and ensuring that every Police Checkpoint remains a frontline defense against criminal activity.
