Gardaí in Westmeath have seized a significant quantity of suspected cannabis and arrested a man in connection with an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in the region. The search operations, carried out toward the end of last week, were part of a targeted effort to disrupt the sale and supply of illegal drugs in the Mullingar area.

According to a statement from the Garda Press Office, the main operation took place on Friday, April 25, 2025. During the search, officers discovered approximately €3,000 worth of suspected cannabis along with various items of drug paraphernalia. The operation was led by members of the Meath/Westmeath Divisional Drugs Unit, supported by the Eastern Region Armed Support Unit and the Garda Dog Unit.

The seized substances will now undergo further analysis by Forensic Science Ireland to confirm their contents. In connection with the seizure, a man in his 30s was arrested at the scene. He has since been charged and is expected to appear before Mullingar District Court at a later date.

A follow-up search was also conducted the following day, Saturday, April 26, at a separate residence in Mullingar. Gardaí recovered a smaller quantity of suspected cannabis and additional drug-related paraphernalia during this second operation.

These recent seizures form part of a broader strategy by Gardaí to crack down on drug activity in Westmeath and surrounding areas. The use of specialized units, including the Armed Support and Dog Units, reflects the seriousness of the ongoing efforts to combat the illegal drug trade.

Gardaí continue to urge members of the public to report any suspicious activity and emphasize that community cooperation is vital in addressing drug-related crime. They also reaffirm their commitment to pursuing those involved in the distribution and possession of illegal substances.

As the investigation continues, further updates will be provided as necessary. The suspect remains in Garda custody pending his court appearance, while the results of the forensic examination of the seized materials are awaited.

Anyone with information related to drug activity in the area is encouraged to contact local Garda stations or use the confidential Garda Confidential Line.
