KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Tennessee women’s basketball coach Kim Caldwell announced Sunday afternoon that senior guard Ruby Whitehorn has been dismissed from the team.
“It is my responsibility to protect the high standards of this historic program,” Caldwell said. “In light of recent events, Ruby Whitehorn has been unable to reflect those standards, and I have made the difficult decision to dismiss her from our team. I love Ruby and will always be rooting for her, but my priority is to uphold the respected reputation of the Lady Vols.”
The announcement follows a difficult week for Ruby Whitehorn, who was charged with misdemeanor possession when an officer with the University of Tennessee Police Department found her in possession of 5.59 grams of marijuana early Thursday morning. The incident occurred just hours after the Lady Vols’ dominant 100-point exhibition win against Columbus State.
In September, Ruby Whitehorn had also pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges aggravated trespassing and vandalism — after she was accused of domestic assault and burglary. Despite these challenges, she had returned to practice and was expected to play a major role for the Lady Vols this season before the latest incident led to her dismissal.
Coach Caldwell emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly, noting her commitment to maintaining the Lady Vols’ reputation. “We have a responsibility to represent this university with integrity and discipline,” she said. “I want to see Ruby Whitehorn succeed in life, but it’s important that we hold every player to the same standard.”
Many supporters expressed disappointment, citing her potential and athletic ability. Before joining Tennessee, Ruby Whitehorn was a highly rated recruit known for her versatility on the court, explosive athleticism, and leadership during her high school career.
While this marks a setback, some close to Ruby Whitehorn remain hopeful that she will use this as an opportunity for personal growth and a future comeback in the sport. Sources say Ruby Whitehorn has been cooperative with authorities and is expected to issue a personal statement soon addressing the situation and her next steps.
Coach Caldwell concluded by reaffirming her focus on the program’s mission: “The Lady Vols will continue striving for excellence, both on and off the court.”
This is a developing story, and updates regarding Ruby Whitehorn and the Tennessee women’s basketball program are expected in the coming days.
