In a historic move, California Lawmakers have passed a comprehensive set of proposals designed to regulate the state’s medical marijuana industry. These new measures aim to bring structure, accountability, and oversight to a sector that has long operated without clear statewide guidance. The proposals by California Lawmakers will also lay the groundwork for a future recreational cannabis market, creating a seamless regulatory base when full legalization expands further.
The new bills approved by California Lawmakers will establish a state agency responsible for licensing dispensaries and ensuring compliance with existing laws. However, local control remains a key part of the bill. Counties and cities will still have the right to ban medical marijuana activity within their jurisdictions if they choose.
Additionally, California Lawmakers have included provisions that prohibit vertically integrated cannabis businesses — preventing a single entity from controlling every stage of production and sales.
