Oregon marijuana fans look to cash in on new law

More than a thousand marijuana enthusiasts and entrepreneurs met in Oregon on Friday to swap samples, contacts and business tips in hopes of profiting from the state's new law allowing the recreational use of pot.

Licensed growers handed out free tastes, gardening experts displayed organic plant food and artists sold marijuana pipes to participants at the "Weed the People" event.

“Cannabis is a great opportunity for us," said D.J. King, a labor organizer with the United Food and Commercial Workers who wants to unionize workers at marijuana grow operations, distributors and retailers.

“There is a lot of money being made, and we want to be sure to spread it out,” she said.

Sheriff: Woman gave kids marijuana at party

Authorities in southern Maryland say a woman gave marijuana to children at a birthday party and tried to teach a 6-year-old how to smoke.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to a home on Treetop Road in Lexington Park early Friday to check on the welfare of several children. Officials say deputies spoke to Tabitha Cassidy, who indicated that she gave marijuana to three 13- and 14-year-olds at a party at her home.

Officials say Cassidy also tried to teach a 6-year-old child how to inhale marijuana. The sheriff's office says deputies found suspected marijuana at Cassidy's home.

Pot at the backyard bbq: How to handle marijuana etiquette in social settings

The savvy Independence Day host and hostess know to keep the cooler stocked with cold beer, the recipe for the tastiest potato salad and when to throw another round of burgers on the grill.

But parties around Oregon this 4th of July offer a twist Miss Manners never anticipated: What's a host to do when a guest pulls up with a tray of brownies infused with hash oil or puffs a joint?

Oregon this week entered the era of legalized weed, raising the potential for awkward social encounters as celebrations of the quintessential summer holiday get underway.

Cannabis consumers who used to leave their joints at home when they headed to a neighbor's barbecue may feel more comfortable toking at parties now that marijuana is legal.

Ballot campaign launches to allow public 'marijuana bars' in Denver

DENVER — The same pro-pot advocates who brought legalized recreational marijuana to Colorado launched Thursday a ballot campaign to allow adult “marijuana bars” in Denver.

Mason Tvert and Brian Vicente, who led the successful 2012 statewide initiative campaign for Amendment 64, announced they have formed the Campaign for Limited Social Use to “allow the use — but not sale — of marijuana at commercial establishments in areas restricted to individuals 21 or older.”

The measure, which would apply only to the city of Denver, needs 4,726 valid signatures to qualify for the November 2015 ballot.

PTSD And Cannabis -- Can Researchers Cut Through The Politics To Find Out Whether Weed Works?

CASCADE, Colorado -- Matt Stys funnels a mound of finely ground God’s Gift, a sativa strain of marijuana, into his multicolored glass bowl and takes a hit. “It allows the images and all the things in your head to lose focus and drift away for a while,” says Stys as wisps of smoke curl from his mouth. For Stys, the images of being a noncommissioned officer running an entry control point in Iraq in 2007 and 2008 can fade away with the smoke: recollections of struggling to differentiate potential combatants from Iraqi citizens, of watching the wounded and dead flowing through his security checkpoint. Other demons in his head can waft away too, like the memories of spending his teenage years in foster care, and the moral ache of questioning the war in which he fought.

Think twice before you inhale: Marijuana is only legal in about half of Oregon

Oregonians who plan to smoke, cultivate or carry cannabis under the state's new recreational marijuana law should make sure they do it in the roughly 47 percent of Oregon where it's strictly legal.

Fifty-three percent of the state is managed by such government entities as the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service, where federal laws list marijuana in the same category as heroin, LSD and ecstasy.

Bud & Breakfasts are popular 4th of July weekend destinations

Still looking for plans for the 4th of July weekend? Never mind a bed and breakfast -- How about a “Bud and Breakfast?”

Marijuana-themed inns are sprouting all over Colorado like...well, weeds. Offering "wake and bake breakfast", "4:20 Happy Hour", and cannabis-infused massages, these lodges are just one of the many creative ways entrepreneurs in the Centennial State are capitalizing on the legal recreational marijuana market.

Other places like marijuana adult camps are more like resorts and “have everything down to even a wine and food pairing with a particular strain,” said Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, a brokerage services provider in New York.
