Marijuana Legalization: Bill Would Make Pot Legal Nationwide, Place Federal Tax On It

Marijuana legalization may soon spread nationwide with two Congressmen trying to strip the drug of its Schedule 1 classification and instead regulate the drug the same way as alcohol. Representatives Jared Polis of Colorado and Earl Blumenauer of Oregon are pushing for a bill that would repeal marijuana prohibition nationwide while also providing an opportunity for the cannabis industry to grow nationwide. Polis wants the federal government to treat marijuana the way it does alcohol — and even named his bill the “Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act.” The bill would set parameters for the Bureau of Alcohol. Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to create regulations for the sale of marijuana nationwide. A second bill would set a federal tax for marijuana.

Colorado bill to register marijuana caregivers passes committee

A state Senate committee on Thursday unanimously approved a bill that would require medical marijuana caregivers to register and allows state agencies to share enough information to ensure pot grown for medicine isn't sold illegally.

While pot sold for recreational use has been subject to a battery of tests and regulations since it became legal last year, medical marijuana has gone relatively unregulated, requiring only that caregivers be at least 18 years old and have "significant responsibility" for the care of a licensed medical marijuana user.

It was zero degrees in Denver on a late December morning, and the ice-covered streets were mostly empty. Mark Mason, wearing a full-length black coat, green wool hat and sunglasses, sat in a white Buick LaCrosse, eyeing the squat building across the street. It was the local branch of the Federal Reserve Bank.
