Vancouver's pot shops: Everything you need to know about marijuana dispensaries

Visitors wandering through Vancouver could be forgiven for assuming marijuana is legal in the city: dozens of storefronts have sprouted up in recent years advertising pot for sale under the guise of medicine. The federal Conservative government insists the so-called medical marijuana dispensaries are illegal, but the city is considering regulating them with a new class of business licence that will simultaneously cut down on the number of stores while also offering them an air of legitimacy.

Here's what you need to you know about Vancouver's pot dispensaries and what the city plans to do.

Cannabis Dispensary Outlet by NullChaotica

Which will remain nameless, although it wouldn't be hard to figure out which one of the 100 in Vancouver currently this particular one is. Especially if certain metadata or GPS info were available.

This is one of the few strict ones, which verifies the regular straight GP/MD doctor's info and signature. Most other outlets require a minimum age of 19, like booze and smokes, but this outlet will allow 18 year olds to obtain a wide array of cannabis products. But only after verification of the application info.

Medical Marijuana Distributors Eye NYC Locations As State Prepares To Grant Licenses

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Could a medical marijuana dispensary be coming to a New York City storefront near you?

As CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, one company has already signed a lease to open up shop in Downtown Brooklyn, but not everyone in the neighborhood wants them to move in.

“Think Apple store meets pharmacy,” said Andre Bogolubov.

Bogolubov, of marijuana producer and dispenser Palliatech, is hoping his company will be one of five dispensaries to be granted a state license to open up a medical marijuana store.

“It is like a pharmacy. It’ll be quiet, secure business, and it will really help people who need it in the community,” he said.

Medical marijuana treatment centers approved by state

Medical marijuana is one step closer to reality in New Hampshire.

The first applicants to open medical marijuana facilities in New Hampshire have been approved by the state, but it will likely be months before they open.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that Prime Alternative Treatment Centers of New Hampshire, Temescal Wellness, Inc., and Sanctuary ATC were selected to begin the post-selection registration process.

These three companies, chosen from a pool of 14 applicants, will be able to operate four medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state.

Marijuana Companies Are Passing On New York Due To High Startup Costs

When it comes to starting a marijuana business, not all states are created equal. In many medical marijuana states with older programs, the barrier to entry into the market is not that large. In Oregon it’s literally as easy as applying for a dispensary license for a fee, and finding a place that is a proper distance away from a school or another dispensary. I know people that have opened dispensaries in Oregon for $10,000, and that includes all the startup costs to start making sales. Most dispensaries in Oregon cost more than that, but for a basic dispensary, that amount is doable.

Closing medical marijuana shops is 'slow but steady'

The city of Seattle has issued the first violation notices to medical marijuana businesses since Mayor Ed Murray and council members announced an initiative to regulate the industry.

Already, there is some resistance.

City attorney Pete Holmes says of the first eight businesses to receive notices, three shop owners are taking the city to court. That may signal a long, tough fight ahead for the effort to close shops that don't comply with new city and state laws.

House Bill 5052, approved by state lawmakers, requires medical marijuana businesses to close if they opened after January 2013. These newer businesses must be issued notices of violation and close by July 2016.
