Interest in Cannabis Workforce initiative program continues to expand

The Cannabis Workforce Initiative recently saw one of its highest attendance rates for its newly launched 10 Week Certificate Course, an indicator that interest in the state’s emerging marketplace is only growing.

The virtual program has over 2,000 signups, and a recent class on cannabis products and manufacturing – where lead instructor David Serrano covered topics like how resin is utilized in goods such as pre-rolls and cannagars – saw more than 600 attendees.

Serrano is CWI’s project manager and has dedicated the last decade of his career to the cannabis industry. Though he lives in New York, he identifies himself as a “Boriqua” from New Jersey, which he said has shaped his perspective towards empowering and providing cannabis educational opportunities to communities of color.

“This community needs to give themselves permission to be successful in the industry. Puerto Ricans have been hugely negatively impacted, especially here in New York, where we have one of the largest populations in the country and outside of Puerto Rico,” said Serrano.

And the demographics of Serrano’s class indicate that his lessons are reaching the intended audience: over 50% of those enrolled in the course identify as BIPOC, and in a CWI survey, 90% of respondents said that they were seeking jobs in the cannabis industry.
