Alaska: Mayor candidates share plans for marijuana policy

FAIRBANKS — The next mayor will influence how marijuana commerce unfolds in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. 

Some of the things to be decided by local leaders in the coming months include whether to limit the number of marijuana businesses, what criteria to require of people wanting to open a marijuana business and the selection process for issuing licenses. 

Marijuana companies are expected to start opening around Alaska during the middle of 2016 as one of the results of voter approval of a statewide ballot measure last year.

The new borough mayor will help decide the amount of an anticipated sales tax on pot and will also be responsible for figuring out how to collect taxes and fees from an industry that is shunned by most banks. 

The state Marijuana Control Board is working on regulations for other aspects of the cannabis industry,
