Sir Richard Branson on Ending the war on drugs, the challenges and opportunities ahead

Last week’s Vienna meeting of the UN’s Commission on Narcotic Drugs was an important stepping stone on the road to 2016, when world leaders will come together in New York to discuss drug policy in a special session of the UN General Assembly, also known as the UNGASS.

As dry as these diplomatic gatherings appear, they play a key role in our effort to end the war on drugs; try new approaches to drug policy that reduce harm; end the criminalisation of drug users and keep non-violent drug offenders out of prison; and treat drugs overall as a health issue.

An Indonesian town was high on more than just life when police set fire to more than three tons of confiscated cannabis.

Residents of Tangerang, 15.5 miles west of the capital Jakarta, reported suffering from headaches and dizziness after inhaling the tangy smoke given off by the bonfire.

The 3.3 tons of marijuana were burned by Palmerah police at their subprecinct office in West Jakarta earlier this month.

Growers push to relax restrictions on hemp

Hemp seed harvesting has started in New Zealand, but the industry wants food regulations changed.

It says despite a popular misconception, the cannabis species is good for humans.

But the Government has its hands tied when it comes to relaxing the rules.

Registered nurse and hemp grower Penny Young swears by eating the plant as a health supplement.

With the help of friends, she's currently harvesting her first crop.

Hemp is a cannabis plant species related to marijuana, but it has virtually no THC – the psychoactive substance that gives users of its cousin a high.

Denver cracks down on marijuana warehouses

Landon Riddle, 5, who has leukemia and uses medical marijuana to treat it, plays in a warehouse where medical caregivers grow marijuana in Denver. Riddle’s mother joined about a dozen activists and caregivers at the facility to discuss adjusting to a Denver City Council decision that bans caregivers from sharing space, which likely could close down warehouses such as this one.

The Denver Fire Department issued 58 permits for warehouses to grow marijuana in nonlicensed facilities last year – marijuana not to be sold in dispensaries. This marijuana was to be grown primarily by caregivers for consumption by medical users or for the grower’s personal use.

Randy Gregory: 'I blame myself' for failed NFL combine drug test

Randy Gregory, a top prospect in the '15 class, said he failed a drug test at the combine.

ATLANTA -- If the evaluation process were solely about talent, Randy Gregory almost certainly would be a top-10 pick in next month's NFL draft. There's little doubt about that.

But with the draft five weeks away, the former Nebraska star suddenly has another issue to address: He tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

Gregory revealed the positive test to NFL Media on Wednesday afternoon in an interview at his agent's home office in suburban Atlanta.
