Two ballot measures to legalize marijuana in Montana OK'd

A pair of complementary ballot initiatives which together would legalize recreational marijuana use in Montana for adults were approved on Tuesday's ballot, the Associated Press reported.
I-190 creates rules for marijuana use, including a 20% tax and the option for individual counties to prohibit dispensaries.
CI-118 amended the Montana Constitution to allow the state to set the minimum buying age to 21.
Both measures needed to pass for recreational use to become legal.
The push for marijuana legalization was headed by New Approach Montana, a group founded in January 2019 by Ted Dick and Pepper Petersen.
At the group’s behest, the Montana Office of Budget and Program Planning to ballpark the tax revenue legal marijuana could generate for the state. It is estimated that legal marijuana could generate around $38.5 million for Montana by 2025.
New Approach Montana spend over $140,000 into signature-gathering efforts to get the initiatives qualified for the ballot.
The entire campaign has generated over $2.8 million, with DC-based organization the North Fund contributing $1.6 million.
The Montana Contractors Association, Montana Chamber of Commerce, Montana Bankers Association, and Motor Carriers Association have all put their support behind opposition group Wrong for Montana.
WFM was found by Billings car dealer Steve Zabawa, who has also opposed past legalization efforts in Montana.
The group launched its opposition campaign with social media ads on Google and Facebook, backed by Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a national anti-legalization outfit.
